On Thursday, May 12th, the Parish Nurses of Our Lady of the Angels Parish in Cape May Court House, New Jersey, along with other members of their parish community, celebrated a “Nightingale Mass” in honor of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is credited as the founder of modern nursing. Father John O’Leary was the celebrant and Deacon George Ferland gave the homily which focused on the idea that everyone is called to serve and nurses, in particular, answer a deeper call of service. Deacon Ferland alluded to the many jobs which nurses do that many people would not or could not do. The Parish Nurses of Our Lady of the Angels, headed by Barbara Dix, provide educational materials in their Health Information Center and coordinate healthy living programs such as “Project Healthy Bones”, which helps to stave off osteoporosis through exercise.
By sharing the treasure of their time and the wealth of their knowledge with their community, these nurses have become a vital part of their parish’s ministry.
