Special Edition April 2022 | Masses of Welcome and Inclusion For Autism Awareness Month

April is the month we bring awareness to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

ASD is complex and primarily impacts a person’s ability to communicate with and relate to other people.  It impacts not only speech, but also the ability to self-regulate one’s own body, feelings, emotions, and adjustments to the world around them.  ASD does not discriminate.  It impacts all races and socioeconomic classes and occurs in both males and females; however, it is more prevalent in males.  ASD is unique in that it impacts everyone differently, making each person with this diagnosis unique.

Pope Francis often speaks about the need to include and accept everyone with open hearts, minds, and kindness.  This includes welcoming anyone into our Catholic faith and including them in our faith community, especially during the Mass.  The Mass is a time when Catholics come together for praise and worship.  However, for some, especially those with ASD, the songs and praise may be overwhelming.  It is for this reason that some of the parishes in the Diocese of Camden celebrate Masses of Inclusion.

VITALity Catholic Healthcare Services’ Ministry with the Deaf and People with Disabilities is dedicated to helping those living with ASD and other disabilities, along with helping their families. During the month of April, VITALity sponsors two Diocesan Masses of Welcome and Inclusion. These Masses aim to reduce some aspects of the Mass which may be overstimulating, including using shorter versions of readings and softer music.  Father Hugh Bradley currently oversees this ministry. Our ministry offers services to help individuals and their families living with ASD and other disabilities.  One of the most effective things most of us can do to foster change is to create an environment where all feel welcome.  While April brings awareness to Autism Spectrum Disorder, Masses of Welcome and Inclusion are threaded within our parish communities throughout the year. We are continually updating which parishes offer these Masses. Please contact us at VITALity-events@CamdenDiocese.org for an updated listing. We look forward to you joining us.
