Here are some tips from the National Catholic Partnership on Disability to help create an environment of acceptance and comfort when interacting or working with those on the Autism spectrum.

  1. Develop a consistent routine or schedule
  2. Minimize distractions and clutter
  3. Create a positive environment
  4. Provide choices
  5. Allow for processing time
  6. Use concrete language
  7. Name the behavior or action you want, for example:  Instead of “Don’t run” say, “walking feet”
  8. Offer short periods of silence
  9. Give two minute reminders before transitions to new tasks or activities
  10. When things get challenging, consider what you can do to change the environment, not the individual
