PARISH NURSE ON A MISSION

Susan Scully is a dedicated Parish Nurse at Holy Angels Parish in Woodbury. She is also a pediatric operating room nurse at CHOP in Philadelphia. If that is not enough, Sue will be sharing her talents in the mission field of Guatemala with her colleagues. What a beautiful example of Mercy and Service for the whole team.

The Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery is organizing the fourth surgical mission to Guatemala in March 2016. For the indigenous residents of rural villages in the northwest highlands, pediatric surgical care is rare, both due to the economics, location and the language barrier of Mayan speaking Guatemalans. A team of three surgeons, three anesthesiologists and 12 nurses will travel to the area bringing their own supplies and medications. From previous experience it was evident that this care is not otherwise available to these children.

Last year, 72 operations were performed and the same is expected this year. Not counting volunteers’ expenses a child can be provided all aspects of their care, transportation and housing for $350.00. This includes travel to the facility from their village, room and board for their time there, complete medical evaluation and surgery.

In addition to the service provided, the team delivers basic health education to the families who attend and there is an opportunity for those in training to gain experience with such a population. A pediatric surgery fellow as well as students will participate. Please join in prayer for the safety and success of this wonderful venture. If you want more information please contact.
